WHY DO WE
HAVE THIS DONATION POLICY?
Prior to 2005, Earthdance events
were required to donate a minimum of 50% of their profits
to charity. In 2005, Earthdance International enacted a
new donation policy requiring events that make over $2000
to send 10% of their profits to Earthdance. From time to
time Promoters ask us why we created this policy. Here is
the answer: |
Every Earthdance event is using the Earthdance
Brand and reputation to create a draw and establish credibility.
We support everyone's events by centralizing them, offering WebPages,
links to your sites, information, a concept to build your event
around, coordination of the Prayer for Peace and a global theme
to unify all events. We promote all the supported charities on
our website - further helping them. Earthdance is not a "one-off"
charity event for the year like it is for most of our promoters.
It is our year-long focus. Many of the events have actually chosen
Earthdance International as their chosen charity as they see the
value of our work and want to support us with more than 10%.
Earthdance is a registered non-profit
organization. We are a charity. Sending money to us in
no way jeopardizes an event's charity status.
We work all year round to coordinate this event.
We wanted to create a way to raise money from the events, but
in such a way that it would not prevent anyone from participating.
We did not want to charge a fee to do an event becasue we wanted
to create a policy that barred no one from participating, yet
held the money-making events accountable to us and our mission.
Chris Deckker, the founder of Earthdance, thought
long and hard about how to create this system. After dedicating
10 years of his life to Earthdance with no financial support and
trying to enlist the help of staff with no real way to pay them,
he devised this system to start generating support for Earthdance
International. This support would be coming only from those events
who were already financially benefitting from doing Earthdance
events.
We do not require any events to make money. Many
events are free and available to anyone. That's fine with us.
Other events barely cover their costs. That's fine. Our policy
is that 50% or more of any event profits (after expenses) go to
their chosen charity. Many of our promoters give 100% of their
profits to charity.
It is only events that are large, professionally run and
actually making money (over $2000 profit) that we ask any return
from. We felt that was fair. All we ask for is 10% of
the profits. If an event clears $2000 profit, that means they
are required to send us $200. If an event makes $12,000 profit,
they would only have to send us $1,200 to be in compliance, the
charity would still get $4,800 and the promoter would get to keep
$6,000 as profit (or send $10,800 to the charity and $1,200 to
us).
As Earthdance grows, more and more promoters
sign up - from every kind of background and business orientation.
Many of them have never done a charity event before, but they
feel inspired by our mission. It is our hope that Earthdance
is inspiring promoters to open their hearts. Events are
not required to keep 50% of the profit and some choose to send
100% to charity. This is wonderful, but we do not demand that
everyone give 100% of their profits away. Some promoters produce
very professional events that make money, raise consciousness
and benefit their chosen charity handsomely. That is a good thing.
Everyone is supported.
We love and appreciate all of our promoters
regardless of the financial outcome of their events
